So the big day has arrived and your groom has received the buttonholes (boutenneires) with a pin each. They look great, but how do you attach this onto the jacket with just a single pin?
Fortunately is is really easy to put a buttonhole on ... once you know how.
Traditionally the Mother of The Groom pins the grooms buttonhole on. Although in modern times anyone can do this. For professional pictures it's recommended to have one of the parents in the picture (even if they aren't the ones putting the buttonhole on)
What's the origins?
In ancient civilisations men wore fragrant herbs and flowers close to the chest (over the heart) to ward off evil spirits, disease, and bad luck. This evolved into a groom and members of the wedding party wearing the buttonhole flower.
What Does a Buttonhole Flower Do?
A groom wearing a matching buttonhole to the brides bouquet symbolises the shared bond and union between partners. The flower can represent love, celebration and connection between the couple. Wearing a buttonhole can quickly identify who is in the bridal party and/or family.
A buttonhole flower is worn on the left hand side (close to the heart) and sits on the lapel of the suit jacket. The flower always faces up ( as opposed to the corsage where the flower design is facing down)
Placing the buttonhole on is a few simple steps.
Step One
Place the flower upward with the stem running down the lapel.
Step Two
Take the pin and attach from behind the lapel flap.
Your pin will go through the lapel, through the back of the rose and back through the lapel.
Step Three
Check that the pin isn't showing and the flower is sitting straight.
